What is a Natural Wonder?

A natural wonder is a facet of nature that as not been manipulated by man.  For example, Mount Rushmore is an incredible mountain and truly amazing wonder.  However, it is the manipulation by man in the carving of the granite stone that changes Mount Rushmore from a typical beautiful mountain into an amazing wonder.  Accordingly, it would not qualify nor be classified as a “natural wonder.”

Natural Wonders are also further determined based on characteristics and measurements.  Although not exhaustive in factors, here is a list of criteria that are considered when determining whether something demands the recognition as “Natural Wonder.”

  • Overall Grandeur and Amazement
  • Historical recognition
  • Uniqueness
  • Length, height, size, volume, expanse and possible measurement
